Leeds United plan free agent striker signing – twist involved

Leeds United’s transfer policy was once highlighted by a tweet from the club on Deadline Day telling fans not to go to bed…just yet. Eager fans were then treated to a slammed-shut window and news of player sales.

Advancing from that it was typified by a marquee signing such as Chris Wood or Kemar Roofe, with others signed as fillers for what was at times a threadbare squad. That changed last summer with a tidal wave of signings including players such as Gianni Alioski and Samu Saiz.

The Whites have already started their January window business early with the capture of Japan starlet midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi. According to Spanish publication Diario de Leon, the Whites are ready to sign another player – a free agent Spanish striker called Alfredo Ortuno.

26-year-old Ortono last played for UD Las Palmas, being let go by the La Liga outfit at the tail-end of November. Whilst only making five La Liga appearances across his career in Spanish football, he does have a wealth of experience in the second tier in Spain. In total, Ortuno has turned out 141 times in La Liga 2, scoring 41 times and providing 14 assists in this time.

El Diario’s Ángel Fraguas says that there is a twist in the signing in that Ortuno will head straight to Cultural Leonesa, who have a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place with Leeds United and common ground in Ivan Bravo who is Vice-President at Cultural and one of the board or directors at Elland Road.

Fraguas says that the forward will be signed by the Whites and sent on to Cultural with a “goal to strengthen the whole of Leon in order to achieve the goal of saving their Second Division [status] at the end of the league championship.”

Leeds United, whilst said wanting to sign and loan out Ortuno to Cultural, are not overly happy with the Spanish club’s treatment of midfielder Ouasim Bouy who is in Spain under a similar agreement.
