Derby County Under 18s earn dramatic FA Youth Cup victory over Manchester United

Derby County Under 18s reached the Fourth round of the FA Youth Cup with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Manchester United.

The game finished 2-2 during normal time, but Derby’s substitute goalkeeper Joe Fryatt saved three spot-kicks in the shootout to guide the Young Rams to victory at Pride Park.

Connor Dixon fired the hosts into the lead after just three minutes by volleying in from outside of the penalty area.

But the hosts only kept hold of their lead for 10 minutes. Tahith Chong made the most of a defensive error and slotted home past Derby stopper Sam French.

Rory Delap’s and Justin Walker’s side retook the lead midway through the first half; defender Jayden Bogle curled in a spectacular free kick from a tight angle which United goalkeeper Alex Fojticek was unable to prevent going in.

The Red Devils equalised early in the second half; substitute Millen Baars picked out Aidan Barlow at the back post with his cross which Barlow headed in to bring the game level once again.

The visitors were reduced to 10-men during extra time after substitute Aliou Traore was shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball foul on Max Bird.

United were forced to play the final portion of the game with just nine players, goalscorer Chong fell awkwardly during an aerial duel and was forced to be carried off on a stretcher. By this stage, the 10-time Youth Cup winners had already made all three substitutes.

Derby ‘keeper Fryatt, who replaced French at half time, was the hero in the penalty shootout. He saved spot-kicks from Lee O’Connor, George Tanner and Millen Baars and with Henry Wise and Jayden Bogle scoring for the hosts, they found themselves 2-0 up.

United pulled a consolation penalty back through James Garner, but Irish midfielder Jason Knight secured the victory for the Rams.

Derby will next face a trip to play Norwich City in the fourth round. Norwich are currently tenth in the Premier League- South, whilst Derby are in fifth place of the Premier League- North.

The tie will be played before or on Saturday 20th of January.
