5 League 1 players who could step up to the Championship

Harry Maguire (Sheffield United)

It amazes me how Harry Maguire is still playing in League One and after rejecting two offers from Wolverhampton Wanderers for his services, Sheffield United’s stance is clear, they want to keep him at Bramall Lane. I remember watching Maguire making his debut off the bench in 2011 during the Blade’s 1-0 defeat at home to Cardiff City. The first contribution of note from Maguire in a Blades shirt was putting in an excellent tackle that left Craig Bellamy sitting on the turf; while also playing the ball.

In his first full season in 2011-12 Maguire was a regular in Sheffield United’s promotion push back to the Championship. Despite agonisingly missing out on promotion that season Maguire was able to look back at the season with pride. He was named as the clubs “Young Player” and “Player of the season”, an outstanding achievement. Maguire has gone onto win a hat-trick of “Player of the Year” awards with the Blades and is also a regular in the PFA League One team of the Year; an accolade he has received three years running.

Built like an ox, Maguire is a strong, powerful centre-back and excellent in the air. He rarely loses a dual in the air even against the most bruising of strikers and plays the game as if he’s a veteran. He is also just as handy in the opposition box as he is in his own netting nine goals for Sheffield United. It’s sometimes hard to remember that Maguire is still only 21 and he can still improve significantly. Maguire deserves to be a Championship player and there is no reason why he can’t get there with Sheffield United this season.
