Sheffield United 1-2 Bristol City – Match Report

Lee Johnson’s Bristol City came away from Bramall Lane 2-1 victors following a last-gasp winner from centre-back Aden Flint. The win sends Bristol City three points clear of their promotion rivals Sheffield United into third place.

Sheffield United made an excellent start to the game and they were all over the visitors. The home side forced Frank Fielding into many saves before they could finally beat him. But, when they did beat him, the woodwork came to Fielding’s aid on more than one occasion.

In the 38th minute, Fielding made an unbelievable save as he palmed a Billy Sharp header from close range onto the crossbar. Just five minutes later Bristol City’s Jamie Paterson put his side 1-0 up after he danced around the defenders and blasted it home from about 25 yards out.

That’s how the first half ended but it took just three second-half minutes for The Blades to equalise. Novembers championship player of the month, Leon Clarke, found himself in the box with the ball at his feet and smashed the ball past the helpless Frank Fielding to make it 1-1.

Just before the hour mark Sheffield United’s Jon Fleck saw red for a shocking two-footed lunge on Kory Smith who is now on crutches according to his manager, Lee Johnson.

Sheffield United battled on with ten men but in the 90th minute, referee, David Coote played an excellent advantage which allowed defender-cum-emergency striker, Aden Flint in behind to expertly slot home from six yards out to earn the three points for his side and send the Bristol City fans home more than happy.

The win sends Bristol City into third place and guarantees them to still be in third place come the end of the weekend. But for Sheffield United, it condemns them to a fourth defeat in seven matches as they finally come to terms with the reality of the Championship.
