Cardiff City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are set to battle it out for German striker

Championship duo Cardiff City and Aston Villa are ready to battle it out for Holstein Kiel striker Dominick Drexler, according to Wales Online.

The striker has scored 10 goals so far for the 2. Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel and has helped them climb to the top of the table. He has caught the eye for the promotion hopefuls and may well be the subject of a bidding war in January.

The 27 year-old striker, who was born in Bonn, has spent his career playing in the lower leagues in Germany having been a product of the Bayer Leverkusen academy as a youngster.

He had spells at FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt, Greuther Fürth before joining third division side Aalen in 2014. After two impressive seasons for them he earned a move to Holstein Kiel in 2016. Since then, he has impressed for the 2. Bundesliga side and is being linked with a move away from Germany for the first time.

Cardiff are one Championship club reportedly after him. The Bluebirds have made a great start to the season under Neil Warnock and will be targeting a striker in January after the injury sustained to Kenneth Zohore which will rule him out for up to a month.

Aston Villa could join them in the race for Drexler. After a slow start to the season, Steve Bruce has picked them back up and they now look like genuine promotion contenders.

Cardiff and Villa will have to fight Premier League side Newcastle to sign Drexler. It is certainly a story to keep an eye on.
