Sky Bet Championship side Cardiff City will challenge Premier League side Newcastle United for striker Dominick Drexler, according to reports.
The Bluebirds are hopeful of attracting the young striker to the Welsh capital after receiving the news that star forward Kenneth Zohore will be out injured until the New Year. Meanwhile the Championship side are also without Rhys Healey as he recovers from the injury he suffered in their 5-0 thrashing of Rotherham in February.
Cardiff’s injury worries in the strike department mean that summer signings Danny Ward and Omar Bogle have received opportunities to feature in the first-team, however reports from German media outlet ‘Kicker’ suggest that Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock is looking to bolster his attacking options in order to maintain his push for promotion.
However the 27-year-old faces interest from Cardiff City and Championship rivals Aston Villa – while Newcastle United have scouted the striker numerous times.
The interest in Drexler has come as a result of his impressive form for second division outfit Holsten Kiel, with his ten goals in all competitions aiding their push for promotion.
The 27-year-old started his career as a youngster with Bayer Leverkusen featuring on multiple occasions for the club’s reserve side throughout the 2009-10 season before moving to FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt.
Drexler became a fan-favourite at his new club in the 3. Liga, netting 16 times in eighty-one appearances prior to transferring to SpVgg Greuther Furth for the 2013-14 season. He then had a two-year spell at WfR Aalen before joining Holstein Kiel last summer.
