Looking at Leeds United summer transfers – what for January

Leeds United had something of a spree when it came to transfers in the summer, something that fans were hardly accustomed to under the previous regime of Massimo Cellino.

However, under new owner Andrea Radrizzani, and his newly installed Director of Football Victor Orta, long-suffering fans were treated to a number of signings – and then some more.

Some fans said that failure to act in the January window cost the Whites as momentum over the first part of the campaign slowed, stumbled and then stalled as February rolled on and the end of the season crept closer.

Leeds had been in the play-off places for 142 days, a spread of 26 games, before a tail-end final judder and loss of form led to what became a seventh-placed finish.

The swathe of new signings helped Leeds to kick on at the start of this season, the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign, and the Whites went unbeaten for their first seven games. Of this ‘Magnificent Seven’ run of results, six were consecutive clean sheets – a run good enough to briefly take them to the top of the pile.

However, a 1-0 loss to Millwall, in a game where the Whites were outfought, outplayed and eventually outclassed, signalled a downhill slope that the Whites found very slippery indeed.

Four wins and a draw against seven losses has seen Leeds United plunge to 8th in the league, their early season form keeping them within sniffing distance of a play-off place. Leeds are only five points adrift of 6th place and Derby County – and with some ‘winnable’ games coming up might fancy their chances of hitting back up the table and forcing themselves into play-off contention.

On the next page is a look at some of Leeds United’s main summer business, and just how they have fared.
