Championship side Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Limerick striker Chiedozie Ogbene, according to the Birmingham Mail.
Premier League side Chelsea are also said to be interested in him too. The Nigerian born striker has a year left on his contract with the Irish club but his form has been attracting the attention of various English clubs.
Aston Villa are one them and are reportedly leading the chase for him and are poised to table a bid in January. The 20 year-old scored 8 goals for Limerick last season.
Having moved to Cork from Nigeria in 2005, Ogbene played for Cork City before leaving them for Limerick. He is being tipped as one of the brightest young talents in Ireland.
Aston Villa are no stranger to giving youngsters a chance. You would feel that Chiedozie Ogbene would get more a chance if he signed for Villa over Chelsea of breaking into their first-team. Chelsea are known for loaning out players and you get the impression that it is extremely difficult for youngsters to get anywhere near their first-team.
However, Villa boss Steve Bruce has given youth a chance this season with the likes of Keinan Davis and Callum O’Hare getting chances in the first-team. In the case of Davis, he was released by Stevenage as a youngster and was given a chance by Villa after impressing for Biggleswade Town.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Chiedozie Ogbene. It is certainly a name to watch out for in the future.
