Rangers defeat damages former Reading defender’s managerial hopes

Former Reading defender Graeme Murty’s hopes of going into management on a permanent basis have suffered a huge blow after his Rangers side were defeated 2-1 at struggling Dundee on Friday evening.

The 43-year-old is approaching almost a month in caretaker charge at Ibrox after taking the reigns on a temporary basis following former boss Pedro Caixinha’s sacking in October.

Murty has coached at academy level at Southampton, Norwich City and Rangers since hanging up his boots in summer 2010. The former Reading favourite is in his second spell in charge of Rangers on an interim basis but Murty is yet to gain a permanent opportunity of managing the Glasgow giants.

The Gers’ 2-1 loss at Dens Park on Friday evening saw the club fall to back-to-back defeats against two struggling sides in the form of Hamilton Academical and Dundee. The Rangers board are the ones who will be blamed for the club’s poor form with no new manager having been appointed four weeks on from Caixinha’s sacking however the recent defeats have severely damaged Murty’s hopes of being appointed into the Ibrox hotseat.

After starting his career with York City, Murty joined Reading in summer 1998 for a reported £700,000 transfer fee. The player went on to enjoy over a decade of success with The Royals in which he made 339 appearances and scored two goals. Murty was promoted to the English Premier League with the club while he was named the Reading Player of the Season in 2001/2002.
