Wolves top the Championship but will they come May

When you pay big bucks, you expect to see results. Well Wolves have certainly done the former, and the latter is rolling along nicely after 17 games of the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship season.

After 17 games, the Black Country side, on 38 points, have a two point lead over second-placed Sheffield United and a four point cushion over Cardiff and the lottery of the promotion play-off places.

New manager Nuno Espirito Santo, more than ably assisted by super agent Jorge Mendes, has seen a veritable trail of talent join the club – spearheaded by the improbable capture of highly regarded Portuguese youngster Ruben Neves, a £15 million arrival from Portugal’s Liga NOS competition and FC Porto.

He’s already creating waves at the club, some naysayers hinting that he would only be there as a stepping stone to the Premier League. However, the young defensive midfielder is already showing his class and consistency at a level befitting his high purchase price.

If the trail of talent is ‘spearheaded’ by Neves, then there is a riptide tearing through the side with the likes of Léo Bonatini (10 goals and four assists) and Diogo Jota (eight goals and three assists) on loan from Al Hilal Riyadh and Atletico Madrid respectively.

Whichever way that you look at it, from whatever direction, Wolves are simply a very well-oiled, exquisitely engineered side. That was evident the way that they simply brushed Leeds United aside on Wednesday night.

Throughout the whole game, Wolves really did show the class that has taken them to the head of the table, with many commentators and pundits saying that the side from the Black Country will take the title at a canter.

It certainly looked that way at Molineux in midweek when the glitz, glamour and sheer polish that Wolves possess was on full display against a Leeds United side that may be stuttering with results but are still a dangerous side to face. That danger was negated at the home side jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, coasting that through until half-time.

A quick-fire Leeds reply through Gianni Alioski early in the second half made it a tasty affair, with Leeds United manoeuvring to gain the upper hand in the game. It looked tight at 2-1, but once Leeds’ Ronaldo Vieira was sent off for a second yellow card Wolves simply pulled away with another quick brace from the impressive Diogo Jota and Helder Costa.

So, nearing the halfway point in the 2017/18 campaign Wolves sit atop the league and are looking comfortable. The thing is, the way that they are playing you’d be a fool to bet against them going up automatically – never mind as champions.
