Leeds United capture of teen striker reflects long-term aim of club

Leeds United’s capture of York City teen striker Ryan Edmondson isn’t just the snapping up of a promising young player, it’s part of a bigger story.

One thing that has been apparent since Andrea Radrizzani’s  takeover of the Elland Road club was that greater investment had been made in youth players, but players coming from a definite footballing pedigree.

Players have been brought in after featuring in the academies of sides like Ajax, Real Madrid and Barcelona and are beginning to find their feet in English football, under Carlos Corberan, for Leeds United’s Under-23 Development squad.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds’ West Yorkshire Sport programme (below), Leeds United MD Angus Kinnear pinpoints one of Victor Orta’s main contributions is creating a “recruitment capability [23:05]” for Leeds United that will serve the club well in the future.

Kinnear then goes on to mention the signing of York City’s young striker Ryan Edmondson, with the former West Ham and Arsenal employee saying this was a direct result of Orta’s recruitment strategy.

Kinnear then goes on to say [23:42] that Orta has installed a recruitment team “specifically focused on English talent, and specifically focused on talent from Yorkshire on the basis that Yorkshire has been, has proven to be, one of the…kind of…richest talent pools in the country.”

The Leeds United MD then concludes this segment of the interview saying that this remains a long-term aim of the club – to create a team with an English/Yorkshire core to it.

The Whites beat off a host of clubs to land youngster Edmondson with the player himself telling the club website, “Obviously it is good to have a lot of clubs looking at you and it gives you that confidence that you have something about your game. Leeds have great facilities, staff and coaching, which will hopefully help me progress and make a career out of the game.”

Could Ryan Edmondson be that first planted seed in the Leeds United growth plan?
