Leeds United MD provides hint of January transfer direction for Whites

When Andrea Radrizzani took over the ownership at Leeds United, rescuing the club from former owner Massimo Cellino, things slowly began to change.

One big thing was the buying back of the club’s iconic ground, Elland Road, that had been in the hands of a private investor for around 13 years. Other changes came to bear fruit when a more bounteous harvest of transfer signings came to be seen.

From beginning to end, I think that there were around 16 signings made – although I am more than happy to be corrected on that figure. That doesn’t include the plethora of players from good footballing pedigrees to play in the Under-23 Development Squad.

The first team has seen brought-in players such as Spaniard Samu Saiz, Macedonian Ezgjan Alioski and German loanee Pierre-Michel Lasogga become immediate starters for a Leeds United side that briefly hit top-spot before falling back to tenth place with their recent slide in results.

This ‘slide’ and drop in fortunes over recent games has led frustrated Leeds United to question whether the right players have been brought in or whether the club’s recruitment policy, spearheaded by Victor Orta, has seen cheaper foreign imports brought in who can’t handle the physicality of the Championship?

Leeds United’s MD, Angus Kinnear, took part in BBC Radio Leeds’ West Yorkshire Sport Leeds United Special on Wednesday and gave an insight into many things happening at the club.

The well-spoken Kinnear also provided an insight into the club’s possible transfer policy when the winter window opens at the beginning of January 2018.

Asked by presenter Gareth Roberts whether there’s money available for the January window, Kinnear was guarded in his reply, but what he did say perhaps illuminates the direction that Leeds United might head when it comes to the opening of the January transfer scramble.

Kinnear replies, first reassuring fans that “there is money to spend [40:58],” before going on to say that, “January is not the best time to be active in the transfer market.[41:03]”

Kinnear continues to elaborate and says that if the club’s management and coaching set-up identify some “specific things we need to address [41:20],” then yes investment will be made available and the club will do business.

However, in a very clear warning that will resonate amongst Leeds United fans, Kinnear says not to just expect the club to be busy in January without an identified plan at hand. On this the former West Ham and Arsenal employee said, “But we are not going to do business for the sake of it [41:27].”

On a more positive note for fans, Kinnear is at pains to point out that the recruitment process is something that is actively directed from management and coaching level by current boss Thomas Christiansen. Speaking of this, the Leeds United MD says, “It will be a conversation between, it will be led by Thomas. It will be led by Victor’s insight into what’s in the market and whether we can provide something which is stronger. [42:04]”
