Former Leeds United and Sunderland boss Simon Grayson is one of the favourites for the Bury managerial vacancy. Although current player-coach Ryan Lowe is the favourite to take over League One’s bottom club.
Simon Grayson is currently the second favourite to take over at the League One Club with a price of 5/2 at the time of writing this. This would be Grayson’s sixth managerial appointment in 12 years. In that 12 year period he’s managed Blackpool, Leeds United, Huddersfield Town, Preston North End and Sunderland.
His most recent success came at Preston North End. During his four-year spell at the club. between 2013 and 2017, he turned the Lancashire club from a lowly League One side into a solid Championship side. He won promotion from League One in 2015 via the Play-Offs. In his two full campaigns with Preston in the Championship, he led them to 11th place finishes with 62 points in both seasons.
In June this year, Grayson was named as the new Sunderland boss which stunned many. Many said he was an idiot to go there and they were correct. Just four months later he got sacked following a 3-3 draw with bottom of the table Bolton Wanderers.
A big factor in Grayson going to Bury could be because of striker Jermaine Beckford. The Jamaican played under Grayson at Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Preston North End. Wherever Grayson has gone, Beckford seems to have followed suit. Could it be Grayson’s time to follow in the Beckford’s footsteps and take a step back down to League One? Only time will tell us that but at the current moment the bookies certainly aren’t ruling it out.
