Wolves are likely to beat Arsenal to the signing of Benfica star in January

Championship side Wolves are interested in signing Benfica midfielder Joao Carvalho in January, according to the Mirror.

Premier League giants Arsenal have also been linked with the 20 year-old but look likely to miss out on signing him at the expense of Wolves. The youngster’s agent is Jorge Mendes, who is apparently wanting the midfielder to join Wolves instead of the Gunners.

This would be some coup by the Championship side. They are currently top of the league after a great start to life under former FC Porto boss Nuno Espirito Santo. They have won eleven games out of sixteen this season and look destined for a promotion push to the Premier League.

The Midlands club have been able to attract big names to Molinuex over the past two seasons. The likes of Helder Costa and Ivan Cavaleiro joined last term and over the summer they forked out £16 million to lure Portuguese star Ruben Neves to the club from FC Porto. They also signed the promising duo of Diogo Jota and Leo Bonatini both on season-long loans.

20 year-old Joao Carvalho could well be the next through the entrance door. Jorge Mendes believes a move to Wolves suits him better than going to Arsenal as he will be able to get some more first-team action which will further his development as a player.

These are exciting times for Wolves fans and leading Arsenal in the race for the possible signing of the Portugal U21 international shows their ability to recruit some top quality talent.
