Plymouth Argyle trialist rejected contract offer to join Scunthorpe

Former Reading forward Simon Church rejected the chance to join League One side Plymouth Argyle in favour of a move to league rivals Scunthorpe United, Plymouth Herald has revealed.

The 28-year-old had been without a club since leaving Dutch side Roda JC at the end of last season following just four appearances in his time in Holland and since had been on trial with Argyle in the hopes of earning a contract with the South West club.

Church, capped by Wales 38 times has struggled for form in recent seasons, scoring just seven times in 74 games between 2013-16 during spells with Charlton and MK Dons following his departure from Reading.

Pilgrims manager Derek Adams has admitted he is still looking for options up front with Ryan Taylor and Celtic loanee Nadir Ciftci both currently injured, leaving Nathan Blissett and youngster Alex Fletcher as the club’s only two out-and-out forward options.

Taylor, who is widely expected to be club’s first choice option, sustained a broken ankle on the first day of the season against Peterborough whilst Ciftci, who has failed to score since joining the club, became injured in a reserves game a few weeks ago. Both are expected to be out for some time.

Plymouth have struggled so far this season and currently sit bottom of League One, five points from safety, although a recent upturn in performances has seen them earn credible draws with high-flying Shrewsbury and Blackburn Rovers as well as last weekend’s 1-0 away win over Wimbledon courtesy of a Joel Grant winner.
