Bristol City defender slams Burton approach in 0-0 draw

In an interview carried by the Bristol Post, Bristol City defender and captain Bailey Wright rounded on last night’s opponents Burton Albion for the Brewers’ approach to the game.

It was a game that the Robins would have expected to win against a Burton side at the opposite end of the table and amid a poor run of form. The whole three points from a victory would have taken City temporarily above second-placed Wolves, seeing them into the automatic promotion places.

It wasn’t to be, Burton arriving with a definite game plan to stifle and negate the home side’s dangerous attacking talents – in a way exposing themselves to minimum potential harm. It was this approach that drew the criticism from Robins captain Wright.

Commenting on the approach adopted by the Brewers, Wright said: “They were organised. You can see what they came here to do,” before adding that a slight to what he thought of Burton’s game-play.

The Australian added to this saying that Burton’s approach was not only negative but not one that sits right with Bristol City’s more swashbuckling style, stating: “that’s not the team we ever want to be.”

Wright expanded on this acknowledging that: “Every manager has their own philosophies. We certainly go out there to win every game, play on the front foot and play our way – that won’t change whoever we face.

This attack-first mentality has certainly worked for the Robins who last season, despite Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham’s goals, languished in the lower reaches of the table. A reverse of fortune has seen them now sit in 3rd place on 21 points, with 20 goals to their name and having conceded only 11 times.

City’s next game is another relative tough encounter against Leeds United, a side who were amongst the early pace-setters in the Sky Bet Championship.
