Charlton Athletic head coach Karl Robinson has told the club website that Leon Best is currently training with the club.
Best is a well-known striker that has got an impressive CV having played for the likes of Newcastle United, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County in the last few years. The 31-year-old striker has often had a decent strike rate while playing in the Sky Bet Championship though his last spell in the league with Ipswich Town was a flop. He made 12 appearances for the club and failed to score once with his last appearance being when they were beaten by Lincoln City in the FA Cup.
Best was released by Ipswich in the summer and has been looking for a new club since but he may now be able to get a contract with Charlton. He contacted the club and asked for the opportunity and now he will need to impress Robinson and the rest of the coaching staff to get a more permanent deal with them.
Robinson said: “He’s here for a few weeks and is training,”
“He certainly adds a bit of depth to us when you look across the field during training. We’ve got 22 players training today [Thursday].”
“We never jumped into anything during the window; we were always very calm and calculated. We know what our squad needs, we know where our frailties lie, and we will just have to wait and see what happens. ”
“Leon contacted me as well, which is always a positive starting point.”
“He hasn’t played competitive football since January. He went out to America and got an infection after an operation on his groin. He seems to be well over that now and has come across as a really nice person in his first few days here. He’s been very cooperative and has fitted into the dressing room well.”
