Birmingham City missed out on first-choice manager to replace Harry Redknapp

Former Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka was Birmingham City’s first-choice to replace Harry Redknapp, as per a report by talkSPORT.

The Blues were apparently not able to persuade the Spaniard to move to St. Andrews. As a result, they opted for former Cheltenham, Stoke City, Burnley, Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill.

Karanka was sacked by Middlesbrough last season when they were struggling in the Premier League. They were eventually relegated as Steve Agnew was unable to keep them up, Karanka has been looking for a job ever since. He guided Boro to promotion in 2015/16, which is why Birmingham were interested in him.

The Blues were unable to persuade the former Real Madrid assistant to join them. Steve Cotterill is the man they eventually went for, he was part of Harry Redknapp’s coaching staff last season and helped keep Birmingham in the Championship. Redkanpp was given the job in the summer but was sacked this season after only 8 games. Lee Carsley was put in temporary charge and made a decent start to his tenure, drawing to Derby County away and beating Sheffield Wednesday at home 1-0.

However, the Blues were battered by Hull City on Saturday 6-1. This was Lee Carsley’s last game in temporary charge and Cotterill takes the team from Monday. Carsley will remain with the club as the assistant manager. Cotterill does have his work cut out after the defeat on Saturday. He now has the international break to try and change the club’s fortunes for the better.
