Leeds United need greater goalscoring threat to maintain promotion push

Leeds United were again found guilty of not troubling the opposition goalkeeper enough during their 3-0 derby defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Sunday afternoon.

The Whites put on a poor performance against The Owls and were heavily beaten on a miserable afternoon in South Yorkshire.

Thomas Christiansen’s men recorded 11 shots on goal against Wednesday however just two of those efforts hit the target as their opponents went on to enjoy a relatively comfortable much needed victory.

Leeds United’s lack of quality in front of goal is becoming a common theme with The Whites having also been poor in the opposition box in other recent outings in the Sky Bet Championship.

In the 1-0 defeat to Millwall at The New Den a fortnight ago, Leeds United failed to register a single shot on target  while their only effort of the whole match sailed wide. A 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Elland Road followed however it should be noted that The Whites scored two goals from their only shots on target while the other goal came in the form of an own goal from visiting keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Prior to the heavy defeat at Hillsborough, Leeds United lost 3-1 at promotion rivals Cardiff City in midweek and Neil Warnock’s side were far superior in that match. The Whites again struggled in front of goal, creating just three shots on target.

There is a fine line between success and failure in the Sky Bet Championship and the simple fact is that if Leeds United are to finish in the top six they must be more clinical when being presented with goalscoring opportunities.
