Match report: Struggling Burton suffer 4-0 loss at home to Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers have moved into the top two of the Championship table after a comfortable 4-0 victory away at Burton Albion.

Goals from Diogo Jota, Romain Saiss and Rúben Vinagre gave the visitors a three goal lead at the half time.
Striker Leo Bonatini, who came on as a second half substitute, completed the scoring shortly after coming on.

Wolves took the lead after just five minutes; Jota scored his sixth league goal of the season when he calmly slotted home Ivan Cavaleiro’s through ball past Burton goalkeeper Stephen Bywater.

The visitors doubled their lead six minutes later when Burton stopper Bywater spilt Ruben Neves’ free kick and Saiss tapped in the rebound to open his account for the season.

Burton’s best chance of the match came midway through the first half, when midfielder Jamie Allen struck a curling effort from outside of the penalty area and forced Wolves ‘keeper John Ruddy to make a strong diving save to his left.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side, full of international talent, showed their class when they went three goals clear. Teenage wing-back Vinagre started and ended the move for the goal. The Portugal Under 19 international pulled off a clever drag-back past Tom Flanagan before a quick exchange with Cavaleiro set him clear on goal. Vinagre shifted onto his left and drilled a shot low shot past Bywater for his first goal for the club.

Substitute Leo Bonatini completed the rout midway through the second half. Full back Matt Doherty flew down the right-wing and played the ball towards Cavaleiro, who cleverly turned past a defender and returned the ball to Doherty. The Irish full back then unselfishly squared the ball to Bonatini who curled his shot into the top corner of the net from close range.

Burton are now without a win in their last four matches in all competitions and are currently placed 21st in the league table, only a point clear of the relegation places.

Results were very fortunate to Wolves and Saturday; their four goal victory leaves them a point behind league leaders Cardiff City.
