MATCH REPORT: Birmingham City 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Tonight Birmingham City won their first league match since August as they came away 1-0 victors at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday. Despite the result, Birmingham stay in the bottom three on goal difference.

The first half chance of the game came on the seven-minute mark. Birmingham City counter-attacked quickly from the back with some fluent passing which ended with a long-range effort from Jeremie Boga that was always rising and ended up somewhere up in the stands.

With the pitch absolutely soaked with the rain it was very difficult for either side to get going. Blues midfielder David Davis was the first man to bring either keeper into the game as he intercepted a stray pass around 25 yards out and hit a low shot which the Wednesday keeper, Joe Wildsmith, saved with ease.

When the game finally got going Sheffield Wednesday were slightly on top (which they were for the majority of the proceedings). An Adam Reach effort called Tomasz Kuszczak into action but the header failed to really trouble him.

In the 71st minute of the game, the Owls striker Gary Hooper thought he’d put his side a goal up but his celebrations were cut short following the raising of the linesman’s flag as he was adjudged to be offside. But with just over 10 minutes to go the deadlock was broken and, of course, it was Birmingham City who took the lead. This came as Vassell, who had barely been on the pitch for 15 minutes, ran through and slotted the ball home to make it 1-0 and send the home fans delirious.

This result still keeps the Blues in the relegation zone on goal difference but this could be the result that kick-starts their season to get them out of relegation danger. The result drops Sheffield Wednesday down a place into 14th which keeps them five points adrift of the playoffs and, following tonight’s other results, eight points adrift of rivals Sheffield United and the automatic promotion places.
