Karl Henry joins relegation threatened Bolton

Former QPR midfielder Karl Henry has joined Bolton Wanderers until the end of the season.

The Englishman has been a free agent since his release by QPR last summer and has 535 professional appearances to his name.

Henry came through the ranks at Stoke City, spending seven years there, before he joined hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers. Another seven years at Wolves saw Henry make 272 appearances for his hometown club and help promote them to the Premier League. After losing his captaincy at the Midlands club, Henry fell out of favour with manager and fans alike and was transfer listen by Kenny Jackett with three years still left on his contract. Queens Park Rangers snapped the midfielder up for an undisclosed fee and he scored his first goal for the club at home to Bolton Wanderers in the Championship. After a successful three years at the club, during which he helped win promotion to the top-tier, Henry was released at the end of the 2016-17 season.

In 2008, Henry was approached by John Barnes to play for the Jamaican national side but he turned the opportunity down. Henry got his next international chance when he was named in England’s provisional 40-man squad for their friendly game against Denmark but did not make the final cut of 26.

Bolton are yet to win in the Championship this season and lie at the foot of the table after their promotion-winning campaign. Eight losses and two draws from their first ten games sees them on just two points and sporting a lowly -21 goal difference. Manager Phil Parkinson will hope that Henry’s experience can plug the gaps at the back and hopefully offer some creativity to push their goal tally past 4 for the season.

Following Bolton’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bristol City, their seventh consecutive loss, the board have pledged their support to the man in charge. This could be an encouraging sign for the former Bradford boss but the dreaded vote of confidence has been the beginning of then end of many a manager.
