Swindon sign former Walsall defender on a free

Swindon have announced the signing of former Walsall centre-back Matt Preston. He has come in to cover for injured centre-back Dion Conroy who is out for nine months.

He has signed a deal which will keep him at SN1 until the end of the season. The 22-year-old rejected a new contract at his boyhood club Walsall earlier on in the summer.

Preston said this about his move  “It took a while to find the right club for me. However, I can tell already from just one training session that this is a good group of lads,”

“I’m raring to get going now. I’ve played against Swindon a few times now, and I know a few of the lads that were here. I know the Gaffer here likes to develop players. That was a big factor in attracting me to come here.

“My number one aim is to play and when I do play to play as many games as I can and stay in the team.”

Swindon currently sit in seventh place in League Two. The Robins beat Forest Green Rovers 2-0 on Friday, and they host fellow promotion hopefuls Coventry City tomorrow where Preston may make his debut.

Swindon have managed to keep three clean sheets so far this season, however, they have been on the end of some drubbings. David Flitcroft’s side lost 3-0 and 4-1 to Crawley and Barnet respectively, and Town’s defence has looked shaky so far this season. Swindon defender Dion Conroy damaged his cruciate ligament against Stevenage, and it’s likely that Preston will be covering for him.
