Ever since Sheffield Wednesday to lost Huddersfield Town in the play offs last season Sheffield Wednesday fans have been starting to get on Carlos Carvalhal’s case. Many fans want him out and today’s result certainly didn’t help. But should Carvalhal relieved of his duties at Hillsborough?
After Carlos Carvalhal and his men got embarrassed live on Sky getting battered 4-2 in the big Steel City derby earlier today they find themselves in 10th place in the Sky Bet Championship. This is six places and five points behind their fierce rivals Sheffield United and seven points off the automatic promotion places. 10th place might not seem that bad but it’s nowhere near where they want and need to be given the ambition and the size of the club.
Two seasons ago Carlos Carvalhal walked through the door at Sheffield Wednesday and was hoping to be the man to take Wednesday back to the Premier League. But him and his Sheffield Wednesday side have fallen short having lost in the play-offs, to Hull City and Huddersfield Town, in the two seasons he’s been in charge.
After two years Carlos Carvalhal hasn’t done what Sheffield Wednesday wanted him to do which has become quite an annoyance to the fans with some of them even calling for him to be axed. The negative style of football he plays really isn’t helping him win over some of the fans who want him out and any bad results seem to make the Wednesday fans angrier angrier every time.
But on the other hand he is consistent which he’s proved by getting into the play-offs in both his seasons as head coach. At this stage in the other two seasons in charge he’s been on 14 and 12 points. So to be on 13 points now puts him bang on his average for this point in the campaign.
Given the fact he’s made very similar starts to the past two seasons in which he’s made the play-offs in both, keeping hold of him for now and seeing how the season pans out is probably the best choice rather than making a rash decision that could backfire horrifically. If the Owls are still hanging around mid table come Christmas then maybe it might be time for the club to consider their options and bring his reign as Head Coach to an end. But that’s is just a matter of opinion which, of course, everyone is entitled to.
At the end of the day it’s never nice to see anyone lose their job but if they’re not meeting their targets then what else can they expect? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the future.
