Are Sheffield United genuine Championship promotion contenders?

Sheffield United have made a great start to life back in the Championship following promotion last season. After today’s 4-2 win in the Steel City derby, there are many calling them dark horses for another promotion this season.

Chris Wilder’s men strolled to the League One title last season as they gained promotion back to the Championship. They are currently 4th in the league, 2 points off the top, after today’s stunning win over bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday. The question on everybody’s lips is can they maintain their great form?

The Blades have Jamal Blackman on loan from Chelsea in goal, the promising young shot-stopper has slotted into the goalkeeper position with ease. In defence, talented centre-back Jack O’Connell usually partners Chris Basham or Cameron Carter-Vickers, with wing backs George Baldock and Edna Stevens beside them. They also have strength in depth in defence, with the likes of Jake Wright, Kieron Freeman and Richard Steerman.

Most of Sheffield United’s talent lies in midfield. The likes of John Fleck, Paul Coutts, Mark Duffy and John Lustram show they have quality in their ranks. Their man on the moment however is David Brooks, who has burst onto the scene at Bramall Lane. The Blades also have goals in their side through fans favourite Billy Sharp and experienced forwards Clayton Donaldson, Ched Evans and Leon Clarke.

The Blades have momentum from last season and the quality to go with it. Therefore, I believe that they are genuine promotion contenders. They need to keep Bramall Lane a fortress and need to dig in and get some wins over rivals like Leeds, Cardiff and Wolves. One thing that is for sure is that they are a very exciting team to watch.
