Stadium fire delays Middlesbrough fixture

Middlesbrough Under-23s Premier League 2 fixture with Stoke City on Friday evening was delayed due to a stadium fire according to the club’s official Twitter feed.

Boro won the match 2-1 at Bishop Auckland’s Heritage Park ground with second half goals from George Miller, although his scrambled second effort was later credited as an own goal by visiting player Luis Da Silva.

The Teessiders’ victory was overshadowed by a fire within the stadium mid-way through the match which saw the game suspended for 35 minutes.

After a nightmare six-hour journey to the north east, Stoke City took the lead against Boro when Tyrese Campbell converted a penalty kick after being fouled by Nathan Guru.

In the 42nd minute, the game was halted when smoke was seen coming out of the ladies toilet in the main stand. The match was delayed for 35 minutes while the fire was put out by the fire brigade.

The match recommenced with the main stand closed to all supporters and while there were no further goals in the first half, it was Boro who dominated the second period.

The Sky Bet Championship club levelled matters in the 68th minute when Miller headed in Lewis Wing’s cross. Boro grabbed the winning goal three minutes before time when Miller was said to have bundled another cross into the net although the final touch came from Stoke City’s Da Silva.

The result sees Boro chalk up their sixth consecutive victory in the Premier League 2.
