Leeds United

Thomas Christiansen gives his thoughts on a “very tough” cup win.

Last night Leeds United beat Premier League Burnley 5-3 on penalties after the two sides drew 2-2 after extra time. Here’s a match summary and the thoughts of the Leeds United boss.

The match summary

The Carabao cup tie was largely dominated by Burnley but they just couldn’t find the back of the net. This was punished by Leeds Uniteds’ Hadi Sakho which brought the game into life.

In the 80th minute Hadi Sakho burst through the Burnley back line and slotted the ball through Nick Pope’s legs to put Leeds United 1-0 up. But in the 88th minute Kevin Long won the Clarets a penalty after Gaetano Berardi tackled the Irish international to the ground. Former Leeds man Chris Wood expertly dispatched the penalty to make it one all. With just 2 minutes of stoppage time left and with the game set to go to extra time James Tarkowski pulled Kemar Roofe away from the ball and a penalty was awarded. Hernandez slotted the ball home to give Leeds the advantage in the 94th minute but there’s more….

In the 6th minute of stoppage time Burnley were awarded a free kick 22 yards out and with Robbie Brady standing over it the ball was only going in one place. He hit an incredible free kick into the top left and corner which sailed past the helpless grasp of former Preston North End keeper Andy Lonergan.

With nothing to report in extra time the game went to penalties. Leeds United won the shootout 5-3 after Stuart Dallas capitalised on James Tarkowski’s penalty miss to send Leeds United through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The thoughts of Thomas Christiansen

Christiansen said, “It was a very tough and long game”. He then added ” We knew it would be very difficult but we came here with intentions to pass to the next round”. When asked about Hadi Sakho’s impact he said, “He came in scored and good goal and worked hard for the team”.

The Leeds boss also had nothing but praised for hero keeper Andy Lonergan, “I have a very good goalkeeper and he has proved that. My expectations of him were fulfilled”. Finally he was asked about the fitness of players Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Matthew Pennington and he responded with “They will probably all be in (the squad)”. This will of course be music to Leeds United fans ears.
