Juventus legend in line for vacant Chesterfield job

Former Juventus striker Fabrizio Ravanelli has applied for the manager role of League 2 side Chesterfield, the Daily Mail reports.

Chesterfield sacked manager Gary Caldwell after a 2-1 home loss to Accrington Stanley on Saturday, leaving the Spireites second bottom of the Football League, and are said to be looking at 30 possible replacements, Ravanelli being one.

The Italian hasn’t been in a management post since he was sacked from French side AC Ajaccio after just 12 matches but is looking for a way back into the game. As well as Chesterfield, Ravanelli has been linked with SPL side Hearts.

Ravanelli made a name for himself in Italy with Juventus where he played with the likes of Alessandro Del Piero, Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Baggio. After his time at The Old Lady, the striker spent a season in the Premier League with Middlesbrough but ultimately couldn’t stop his side suffering relegation.

Ravanelli has had a taste of the East Midlands before after his time as a player at Derby County. He scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for the Rams.

After retiring at boyhood club Perugia, Ravanelli took on a role in the Juventus youth setup. After two years the Italian took over as head coach of AC Ajaccio, signing a two-year deal, but lasted only two months before he was sacked following a 3-1 defeat to Valenciennes FC.

Other candidates that have emerged for the job are Tim Sherwood, Neil Redfearn and Cambridge manager Shaun Derry but the current favourite (according to BetVictor) is Jack Lester. The Nottingham Forest under 23’s Manager and former Chesterfield striker is 1/3 to take the reins at his former club.

Chesterfield’s head of recruitment Guy Branston has taken temporary charge of the League 2 side until a permanent manager has been found.
