The 6 longest serving Football League managers

6. Keith Hill (Rochdale)

Appointed 22 January 2013

Keith Hill is a Rochdale icon. Remarkably, the Dale have only achieved three promotions in their 110-year history (in 1969, 2010 and 2014), with Hill overseeing two of them. The 48-year-old Lancastrian brought an end to the side’s 36 consecutive seasons in the bottom tier of English league football in 2010, winning promotion to League One.

However, with Hill joining Championship outfit Barnsley in 2011, Steve Eyre and then John Coleman made a royal mess of all his hard-work, with Rochdale returning to League Two in 2012. Hill returned to Spotland in January 2013 with Coleman continuing to flounder, and proceeded to win promotion once again in 2014, in his first full season back at the club.

Hill is continuing to work minor miracles in Greater Manchester, leading Rochdale to a highly-commendable 9th place finish despite the scant resources at his disposal. After a slow start to this campaign, in which Rochdale have won just once and sit in the relegation zone, Hill’s previous successes have surely afforded him plenty of time to climb back up the table. You would be extremely foolish to bet against him doing so.
