Shrews fans pledge £50,000 to crowdfunding campaign

The dream of safe standing may soon become a reality at New Meadow

Shrewsbury Town fans have hit a landmark in their campaign to equip their ground with rail seating. The campaign launched on August 1st and the club have been overwhelmed with the amount they’ve raised in under two months. Joint Chairman of the Supporters Parliament Roger Groves said that since their move to New Meadow ten years ago ‘being able to stand in a proper standing area is something that many of our fans have missed’.

The campaign was launched by Shrewsbury CEO Brian Caldwell, the STFC Supporters Parliament, the Football Supporters Federation and crowdfunders Tifosy.

There is definitely a buzz around the club at the moment and fans are excited with the progress that their team are making on and off the pitch. Currently top of League One, Shrewsbury are enjoying their best season of late and this successful crowdfunding campaign is just the latest nugget of good news for fans of the Shropshire club.

This campaign is not only backed by fans of the club as local businesses have played their part in reaching this goal, pledging their support in return for publicity and sponsorship opportunities. German powerhouses Borussia Dortmund have also supported the campaign and echoed the feeling of those within the Shrewsbury camp, stating that ‘standing has always been an integral part of the fan culture’ at their club.

The rewards on offer for fans range from signed shirts to a place on the supporters’ wall of fame and even include the opportunity to stand on the famous ‘Yellow Wall’ at Borussia Dortmund’s 80,000-capacity stadium.

The club hope that they can hit their goal of £75,000 in the next few weeks and, if so, aim to have an operational safe standing section by the end of the 2017/18 season.
