It’s a cool September evening in a dimly lit Press room in Gloucestershire, but beads of sweat are clearly visible on Mark Cooper’s head.
It’s been a difficult start to life in League 2 for the Forest Green Rovers Manager. At the start of the season, club Chairman Dale Vince claimed that reaching League 1 would be “Easy” but so far it seems that Cooper hasn’t had the skill or Talent at his disposal to prove these claims true, with the Cotswold side shipping 19 goals in 7 League matches, for many a leaky and inexperienced defence is to blame.
“It’s difficult to see that we’ve spent a week working on defending.” A stressed Mark Cooper told the local media after Saturday’s 1-3 Home loss to fellow South Western outfit Exeter City.
“It’s difficult to keep changing it. What we want is a settled team, but every time we put different defenders in the team we concede goals from horrendous mistakes.” He added.
Mark Cooper will be feeling the pressure again after last night’s loss to Lincoln, with many suggesting he’ll be fighting for his job over the next few games, with Forest Green fans speculating that Cheltenham Born Steve Cotterill could be the man to change their fortunes.
Dale Vince and his newly promoted side are aiming to impress the Football League as the widely touted “Most sustainable club in England” but with heavy spending both on and off the pitch, low attendances and poor results, will it be financially sustainable, with average losses of £2.5M a season for the past few years, can they afford to go down?
It’s still early days. But with such lacklustre performances, we’re yet to see whether Dale Vince will keep his faith in Cooper to achieve the club’s goals.
