It was coming, Leeds United fans willing the result over the line, and this evening it arrived – Leeds United are leading the league in the Sky Bet Championship.

It wasn’t the swashbuckling and swaggering display that swept away Burton Albion on Saturday before a baying 33,000-strong crowd at Elland Road, it was a different kind of game. Against visitors Birmingham City, Leeds United had to dig deep and fight from the trenches to take all three points.

The Whites dominated in parts, and in other parts were dominated themselves, but it was a flowing affair in which both sides played their part in an industrious game in front of a 31,507 crowd at Elland Road. In the end, it was goals by Samu Saiz (17′) and Stuart Dallas (90+1) that saw Leeds United go seven games unbeaten and keep six consecutive clean sheets.

The win against Birmingham, coupled with Preston’s 3-0 humbling of former leaders Cardiff City meant that Leeds headed the table ahead of a trip down to London to face Millwall at the New Den. After that the Whites face a trio of tricky games against Ipswich (home), Cardiff (away) and Sheffield Wednesday (away).

Topping the Championship/Second Division table, for the first time since 1990 and the days of Howard Wilkinson, has led to a deluge of Leeds United fans taking to Twitter to comment on a team that is finding many ways to win, results showing they are far from a one-dimensional side.
