Young Leeds United midfielder Romario Vieira was sent off as The Whites’ Under-23s side fell to a 1-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic in Greenwich on Monday afternoon.

Carlos Corberan’s side were already trailing The Addicks at the time of the player’s dismissal but any hopes of a comeback were wiped out when they were reduced to 10-men.

Leeds United had their chances to open the scoring at the home of Greenwich Borough FC with Tom Pearce, Liam Kitching and Paul McKay all spurning good chances to score in the first 20 minutes of the match while midfielder Madger Gomes was a constant thorn in Charlton Athletic’s side.

The home side took the lead against the run of play in the 39th minute when Tarique Anderson showed great skill to fend off Leeds United defenders to score and the real turning point in the match came two minutes later when The Whites lost midfielder Vieira to a second booking which really could have been avoided.

Gomes did waste another chance to score for Corberan’s men in the second half while substitute Adrian Balboa Eoghan Stokes went close to netting for The Whites however Charlton Athletic’s one-man advantage was key to their victory.

With youngster Vieira desperate to break into the first team picture at Elland Road, his dismissal for the Under-23s will not help his cause. The player is out of contract again in the summer and he will need to prove his worth between now and the end of the season to ensure that he is offered a new deal by the West Yorkshire club.
