Championship side Fulham have announced the signing of 19 year-old defender Rob Atkinson from Basingstoke Town on their official club website.
He will join up with the Cottager’s U23s side having signed from non-league side Basingstoke Town, where he was player of the year last season. The youngster preferred position is centre-back but he can also play left-back.
Atkinson came up through the ranks at French side Cannes before moving back to English football. He is also a futsal player for England U19s. Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic is no stranger to giving youngsters a chance in the first-team. Left-back Ryan Sessegnon broke into the first team at the age of 16 last season. It is certainly an exciting time at Craven Cottage with some promising youngsters coming up through the ranks.
Fulham came 6th in the Championship last season under Slavisa Jokanovic. This was a great achievement considering they finished 20th the season before and even sold their 2 strikers, Ross McCormack and Moussa Dembele. Despite this, Fulham, mainly I nspired by Tom Cairney, got into the Play-Offs but unfortunately were beaten by Reading and did not make the final. They have have however managed to keep hold of key players like Cairney and Sessegnon and are many bookies favorites to make the Play-Offs again this season and take one more step closer to Premier League.
It will be interesting to see how new signing Rob Atkinson performs for the Fulham U23s. It is definitely a name for Fulham to watch out for in the coming seasons.
