Aston Villa and Birmingham City wanted Hull City striker

Championship sides Aston Villa and Birmingham City were interested in signing Hull City forward Abel Hernandez over the summer, as per a report by the Hull Daily Mail.

Pablo Bentucar, Hernandez’s agent, claims  he had domestic interest in the Uruguayan striker. Premier League Newcastle United, along with Birmingham and Aston Villa, were tracking the striker.

It looked certain that Hernandez was going to leave Hull City after relegation to the Championship last season. He scored 22 goals for the Tigers when they were promoted to the Premier League in May 2016, but failed to find form in the top flight. Hopes of a move away were dashed after he was ruled out with an Achilles injury for 6 months during Hull’s clash with Wolves. This was just days after he scored a hat-rick for Hull against Burton Albion in a 4-1 win.

Aston Villa were one club apparently interested in the striker over the summer. Their boss Steve Bruce signed Hernandez from Palermo for around £9 million and managed him throughout his time as Hull boss. He also raided his former side to sign Ahmed Elmohamady.

Villa rivals Birmingham City were the other domestic club linked. They had money to spend over the summmer, however a move for Hernandez never materialised. They opted to sign players such as Jota, Maxime Colin and Jeremie Boga instead.

For Hull, keeping Hernandez was a bonus, he has scored 31 goals in 91 games for the Tigers. However, his long-term injury in a big blow. Leonid Slutsky swooped for Wolves striker Nouha Dicko for a few of around £3.5 million last week to fill the gap left by Hernandez’s injury.
