Sky Bet Championship side Barnsley have completed the loan signing of Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner. The 25-year-old now departs Villa Park for sixth separate loan move of his career, this one lasting for the remainder of this season.
Gardner appeared for Villa recently during their Carabao Cup victory over Wigan Athletic, but his last league appearance came all the way back in April at the end of last season. He actually enjoyed a decent amount of game time last season, playing 27 times for the club, but is clearly well down the pecking order.
This is all to Barnsley’s gain, and Tykes boss Paul Heckingbottom expressed his delight at getting the deal across the line,
“We’re really pleased with the signing of Gary, he’s an important addition to give us greater flexibility within the squad and we look forward to working with him. He is going to help us this season and we’re definitely looking forward to that as well.”
Gardner has played over 40 league games in the Aston Villa first team, but as mentioned, has mostly spent time out on loan. The most recent includes two separate spells with Nottingham Forest, whilst he can also count Brighton & Hove Albion, Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City as former clubs of his. Barnsley are now added to those ranks and Heckingbottom will be looking for him to have an immediate effect. There is a good chance he may actually be thrown straight into the starting eleven following the international break. He is also a former England Under-21 international.
