Championship side Ipswich are close to announcing the loan signing of Brighton defender Connor Goldson, TTWD understands.
The 24-year-old has made 29 appearances for the Seagulls since joining from Shrewsbury Town in 2015, scoring two goals in the process. The Englishman still has three years left on his current deal however and has fallen further down the pecking order at the AMEX following the Albion’s promotion to the Premier League.
The Englishman is highly regarded at the club but due to other options is their fourth-choice centre back behind Shane Duffy, Lewis Dunk and Uwe Hunemeier.
Last season he made only four Championship starts and one substitute appearance due to a knee injury suffered in pre-season and then also heart problem which cut short his season. He also made a further two appearances for the U23 side in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Town manager Mick McCarthy has seen a defender as a priority for quite some time with the trio of Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Adam Webster all sidelined with injury. The Tractor Boys have begun the season well, winning four of their opening five league games, scoring nine goals in the process which has seen McCarthy ease concerns on attacking players and focus more heavily on shoring up his defensive options.
Goldson has featured just once this season for Chris Hughton’s side, helping Brighton earn a clean sheet in their 1-0 victory over League Two side Barnet in the Carabao Cup and has also been subject to interest from fellow Championship side, Sheffield United.
