Free agent centre back Sebastien Bassong could earn himself a contract with Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City, according to the Birmingham Mail. The former Norwich City defender, who he left at the end of last season, has been training with Harry Redknapp’s side over the last few weeks.
The 31-year-old previously worked under Blues boss Redknapp during their time together at Tottenham Hotspur. Bassong featured for the Birmingham Under-23 side in a recent clash with Watford, featuring for an hour in the match. Redknapp is now considering the prospect of offering him a deal, most likely until the end of the season at least.
Although today is transfer deadline day, there is no immediate pressure to get the player signed up before the 11pm deadline. With him being a free agent, he can be signed at any time. Harlee Dean has joined from Brentford, whilst Marc Roberts moved from Barnsley earlier in the summer to slot alongside Michael Morrison in the defence. Ryan Shotton moved on to Middlesbrough but Jonathan Grounds can also play in a back three too. It could be argued that Birmingham don’t necessarily need another central defender, but on a free transfer he could be a tidy option.
The fact he is a left-footer does make him more appealing, as he could potentially play on the left side of a back three, providing more balance to the side. That being said, the player is still building up his fitness and probably wouldn’t be ready to start a Championship game any time soon. He’d be a handy cover option to have, and the fact the pair have worked together before will surely count as a positive in Bassong’s corner.
