Burton in hunt for Premier League midfielder

Championship side Burton Albion are interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Jordon Mutch according to the Derby Telegraph.

The 25-year-old has struggled for game time since moving to Selhurst Park in 2015 in an initial £4.5m fee from QPR in 2015.

The former Cardiff City man has made 31 appearances in the league for Palace, with 20 of those having come from the substitutes bench. He joined Reading on loan in January, making nine appearances for the Royals, scoring one goal as they missed out on promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Brewers manager Nigel Clough will be keen to add a midfielder to his ranks ahead of the transfer window shutting later on today, particularly after losing prized asset Jackson Irvine who joined Championship rivals Hull City on Wednesday in a £2m deal.

Cough could be looking at a few deals this transfer deadline day with his Burton side having won just once in their opening five league games, acquiring just four points from a maximum of 15.

Mutch began his professional career at Birmingham after leaving Derby County as a teenager and had loan spells with Hereford, Doncaster and Watford, before making a permanent move to Cardiff City in 2012.

QPR paid £6m for him in 2014 from the Bluebirds but once again his stay was short at Loftus Road as he joined Palace 18 months later in the Premier League.

Whilst hardly a goalscoring midfielder, with 17 career goals to date, the Palace man is experienced with nearly 200 career appearances and could prove to be a decent signing with Albion once again looking to consolidate their place in England’s second tier.
