Wolves enter race for Porto striker but face competition

Wolves are hoping to defy the odds and sign Porto striker Vincent Aboubakar before the end of the transfer window, according to Foot Mercato.

Porto are set to offload 25-year-old Aboubakar – against the wishes of manager Sergio Conceicao – in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and have set their asking price at €20m (£18.4m). Marseille have already seen two offers rejected and have reportedly submitted a third, worth €18m (£16.6m) with a 20% sell-on percentage. However, Wolves have now expressed an interest in the Cameroon international.

Wolves have already been involved in deals with Porto this summer, namely for Ruben Neves, Willy Boly and manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Super agent Jorge Mendes, who has been the main reason for Wolves’ success at securing notable signings this summer, is looking to aid the Championship side again by helping them beat Ligue 1 outfit Marseille to the signing of Aboubakar.

Wolves are in search of a new striker after Nouha Dicko joined fellow Championship side Hull City for an undisclosed fee on Tuesday. Preston striker Jordan Hugill, who handed in a transfer request earlier this week, has been linked with a move to Molineux but, after failing to progress in talks to sign Hugill on Wednesday, Wolves may have averted their attention elsewhere on transfer deadline day.

Wolves were also thought to have an interest in Newcastle forward Dwight Gayle but reports emerging on Wednesday afternoon suggest that promotion rivals Fulham have taken the lead in the race to sign the former Crystal Palace man.
