Wolves set to hijack Hull deal for Premier League midfielder

Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback is in talks to sign for Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to the Daily Mail.

The 27-year-old would make a loan move to Molineux, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez.

This latest development comes after Hull City had been discussing a move with the midfielder, although it appears that Wolves’ ambitious project is attracting Colback to the West Midlands, and he would prefer to join Nuno Espirito Santo’s men rather than Hull City.

Colback came through the youth academy at Sunderland, before making a controversial move to their biggest rivals, Newcastle, in June 2014. He has since made nearly a century of appearances for the Magpies, but is yet to feature in a Newcastle squad this season.

If Wolves end up signing Colback, the former Sunderland midfielder will become the big-spending side’s 15th summer signing. The likes of Ruben Neves, John Ruddy, Roderick Miranda and Barry Douglas have all signed permanent deals at Molineux, whilst striker Leo Bonatini is one of four loan additions.

It is evident that in building this formidable-looking squad, Wolves have only one thought on their mind this campaign: promotion.

The side, who are owned by Chinese conglomerate Fosun International, currently sit 4th in the Championship, with a respectable 10 points from their opening five matches, and the pressure will be on manager Santo, the former boss of Valencia and Porto, to win promotion in his first season at the helm.

Jack Colback’s next destination remains to be seen, although it has to be said that Wolves will have signed a very talented individual if they steal him from under Hull’s noses.
