Birmingham City defender undergoing a medical at Middlesbrough

Birmingham City defender Ryan Shotton is having a medical at Middlesbrough ahead of a £3 million move to Teesside according to Sky Sports Keith Downie.

Shotton has been rumoured to leave the club for a while. He played 43 league games for The Blues last season as they narrowly avoided relegation to League One. The former Stoke defender was praised by Blues manager Harry Redknapp who said: ” Ryan’s attitude has been first class, but he wants to move to Middlesbrough.”

After relegation from the Premier League, last season Boro are looking to build a team capable of winning promotion at the first time of asking. Since Garry Monk has been appointed, they made a number of high profile signings.

Boro have already kept three clean sheets this season, and the addition of Shotton is only going to help strengthen the defense even more.

Shotton started his career with Stoke. He made 46 appearances for The Potters over an eight year period. After a brief loan spell with Derby, he signed for The Rams permanently. He played nineteen times for Derby but he was finding game time hard to come by therefore he went out on loan to Birmingham in 2016. Shotton permanently signed for The Blues in June 2016.

Middlesbrough face struggling Bolton next week. Boro currently sit 9th in the Championship, and they’ll be looking to beat Bolton who are low on confidence. Will Ryan Shotton help Middlesbrough win promotion back to the top flight? Or will it be a frustrating year for Garry Monk and his team?
