Norwich plotting late move for Newcastle defender despite interest from Leeds, Derby, Sunderland and Birmingham

Norwich a plotting a late move for Newcastle defender Grant Hanley according to The Scottish Sun. The Scottish international has been told that he can leave the club permanently.

Hanley joined Newcastle last summer, as the Magpies looked to win promotion back to the top-flight at the first time of asking. He played sixteen games last season and scored once. However, he has not yet made an appearance this year, and he’s been told that he can leave the club by Rafa Benitez.

Leeds, Birmingham, Derby and Sunderland are all interested in signing the 25-year-old. However, The Canaries look to be in the driving seat to secure his signature.

Norwich are in desperate need for some stability at the back after they have conceded eight goals in their last two matches against Aston Villa and Millwall respectively. Hanley is looking for first-team football and Norwich should be able to secure that for the former Blackburn captain.

Hanley is currently with the Scotland squad ahead of their World Cup qualification games against Lithuania and Malta.

BetVictor have currently priced Leeds at 4/1 to sign Hanley, while Sunderland and Birmingham have both been priced at 8/1 to sign the Scotland international. However, it’s likely that these odds will change due to Norwich’s interest.

The defender started his career with Blackburn. He broke into the first-team in the 2011-12 season as Rovers were relegated from the Premier League. After impressive performances for the club, he was made captain in 2014. In 2016 he signed for Newcastle for a fee in the region of £5.5 million. However, he struggled to get game time at St James Park, and he has since been deemed surplus to requirements.
