Sunderland and QPR competing to sign young defender

Sunderland and QPR have both shown an interest in young Motherwell defender Ben Heneghan, according to Chronicle Live.

Championship sides Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers will face competition from Scottish club Rangers as well.

The 23-year-old centre back is regarded as a hot prospect north of the border, and will most likely be available at a price that will not break the bank. This is due to him reportedly rejecting a contract from Motherwell, which means he has entered the last year of his current deal. He signed from Chester last year, and made 41 appearances for The Steelmen, attracting the attention of a plethora of scouts in the process.

Motherwell may be open to offloading Heneghan before Thursday’s deadline, as they look to potentially cash in rather than not receiving any money for him in the future.

QPR are a club willing to spend money, whereas Sunderland are looking to take a steadier step in making funds before spending.

His current transfer value is £270k; a sum of money that QPR  and Sunderland will most certainly not be put off by.

Heneghan has featured for the England C team 3 times, as reported by transfermarkt.com.

Grayson is looking to bolster his defensive options, especially if Lamine Kone leaves the club. Heneghan would be a smart, cheap option for the Black Cats as he is a player that can only improve in the Sky Bet Championship.

Sunderland have already signed two defenders this summer – Everton loan duo Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway.
