Player Profile: Leeds-bound Jay-Roy Grot

Leeds United are expected to announce the signing of Jay-Roy Grot tomorrow, according to journalist Phil Hay.

Hay reported via his twitter account that a contract has been agreed and finalised, leaving just ‘a few more formalities to finish off’.

In this article we will be giving an insight into who Grot actually is, before his imminent arrival at Elland Road.

Grot is a 19-year-old striker who currently plies his trade for NEC Nijmegen – a team that currently plays in the Jupiler League 1 (the second tier of Dutch football).

The 19-year-old has featured 10 times for Netherlands Under 17s, scoring 2 goals. He has made one appearance for the Under 18s without scoring. Before his debut for the Under 18s, he had played games for the Under 19s. At present Grot has netted 1 goal in 6 appearances with the Under 19 squad.

During his professional career, Grot has only ever played for NEC Nijmegen, but that is soon about to change when Leeds United announce his signature at Elland Road.

The 6 foot 3 inch striker’s main nationality is Dutch, but also qualifies to play for Surinam. He suffered a frustrating season with NEC during 2016/17, which eventually led to them being relegated to the second tier. Grot featured 20 times during the club’s stay in the top flight and he netted 5 goals in the process. A ratio of a goal every four games in the nation’s top division is impressive for someone of his age.

His contract at NEC Nijmegen still has 1 year remaining.

It’s probably expecting too much of the young striker for him to fill the gap left by a talisman of Chris Wood’s quality, but could Grot be the next striker that Leeds sell on for a huge profit, or indeed could he be the man to fire the Whites into the promised land of the Premier League?
