Christiansen confirms who will replace Chris Wood at Leeds

Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen has sent a confusing message to the club’s fans after claiming that Kemar Roofe could be the man to replace frontman Chris Wood at Elland Road.

On the back of Roofe’s spectacular hat-trick in the 5-1 rout against Newport in the Carabao Cup, Christiansen admitted to the Daily Star that the former Oxford forward has the quality to be the long-term replacement for Wood, who joined Burnley for £15m earlier this week after scoring 30 goals in all competitions last season.

Christiansen said: “We know the quality of Roofe.

“He could be an option long term. If you see how he played up front today – he scored nice goals.

“We can still play the direct way, we can play with balls in the space and we can play into his feet. We have many possibilities if we should play with him.”

Leeds have, however, reportedly agreed a fee for NEC teenage sensation Jay-Roy Grot on Wednesday afternoon and have had a bid rejected for Middlesbrough striker Rudy Gestede in the past few days, leaving fans confused as to what will unfold before the end of the transfer window.

The Whites are still expected to recruit another forward before the window slams shut, with fellow striker Souleymane Doukara moving to Turkish outfit Osmanlispor on Wednesday and speculation already circulating prior to the departures of Wood and Doukara.

Christiansen confirmed following Wood’s exit that the funds received for his services would be reinvested but did not disclose as to which positions were priorities to improve.

With the manager sending mixed messages, the Leeds fans could have an unpredictable few days ahead as the end of the transfer window draws ever closer.
