Leeds United agree fee for Chris Wood replacement

Leeds United have agreed a deal to sign NEC striker Jay-Rot Grot, subject to a medical, according to reports in Holland.

Dutch website De Gelderlander claim that Grot will replace Chris Wood, who joined Premier League side Burnley earlier this week, as long as his medical raises no concerns.

Grot was close to a move to Serie A outfit Fiorentina earlier this summer and even flew out to Italy, only for the two sides to fail to agree a fee.

The 19-year-old impressed in the Eredivisie last season, scoring six goals in 23 appearances before NEC lost their relegation play-off match against NAC Breda. Their relegation is believed to be one of the main reasons for the sale of Grot, who is eager to play at a higher level to improve his chances of a successful international career with the Netherlands.

The cost of the deal remains undisclosed, although it is thought to be much less than the £15m that the Whites received for Wood. It also remains unknown as to whether this will be Leeds’ final attacking signing of the transfer window, with speculation looming large over additions prior to Wood’s departure. Middlesbrough frontman Rudy Gestede is a name that has been closely linked with a move to Elland Road, with Leeds reportedly having a £6m turned down in the last few days.

Grot is believed to be a striker in a similar mould to Wood, whose physicality and power helped him to score 30 goals in all competitions last term. Along with his physicality and power, Grot also possesses blistering pace and dribbling ability and has, at times, being utilised as a right winger for NEC.
