Sheffield United fans were delighted after they claimed a 1-0 win over South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley.
One of the great things for the Blades about being promoted as that they would be able to reignite several rivals in their local area, especially having had no South Yorkshire derbies last season. While they are going to have to wait until the end of September for the big one against Sheffield Wednesday, they did get a welcome back to this type of game with a match against Barnsley.
And while the Tykes were hopeful of getting a win after getting a win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, they did end up falling at Bramall Lane. Billy Sharp would get the only goal of the game when he scored after a good cross from Jack O’Connell but it wouldn’t be the only incident of note. Both Leon Clarke and Angus MacDonald would get sent off for an off the ball incident, showing any United fans that had forgotten about it how passionate the players can get in these derby matches.
But while Sheffield United will now be without Clarke for the next few games, a huge blow considering the great partnership he has had with Sharp in the first few games of the season, the fans were still very happy to get the win over Barnsley. The win not only gives them some local pride but also ends a two match losing streak which may have caused a bit of worry among some parts of the fan base.
