Aston Villa and Sunderland both interested in taking Premier League winger on loan

Aston Villa and Sunderland are set to go head-to-head to sign West Ham winger Robert Snodgrass on loan, according to the Express and Star.

Snodgrass joined West Ham from Hull City for £10m in January but has failed to impress at the Olympic Stadium and, as a result, has been told that he will be allowed to leave the club on either a permanent or temporary basis after the Hammers made Marko Arnautovic their club-record signing in a £25m deal.

The Scotland international found the net nine times in 24 appearances for Hull in 2016/17 before being sold to West Ham and also contributed three league assists for the Tigers, who, at the time, were battling relegation.

Neither Aston Villa nor Sunderland have the financial capacity to provide a permanent option for Snodgrass, but both sides are reportedly interested in taking him on loan for the rest of the season.

Villa boss Steve Bruce signed Snodgrass for Hull and is keen on rekindling his relationship with the Scotsman. Bruce, in fact, attempted to sign Snodgrass in January but could not compete with the fortunes of the Premier League

Sunderland manager Simon Grayson, meanwhile, managed the 29-year-old during his tenure at Leeds but, whilst he is open to adding Snodgrass to his squad, has doubts about Sunderland’s ability to do so in their current financial situation.

When speaking about the possibility of signing Snodgrass, Grayson said: “That would be a deal dictated by finances. Can we do it? Who knows, but we might ask the question.”
