Aston Villa, Bruce denies Villa interest in Magpies midfielder

Bruce denies Villa interest in Magpies midfielder

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has dismissed reports in the media linking the club with a move for Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 27-year-old Tyneside born midfielder made 29 appearances for The Magpies in the Sky Bet Championship last season as the club went on to win the league title.

The player is believed to have fallen out with officials at Newcastle United while manager Rafa Benitez has deemed Colback to be surplus to requirements at St James Park.

Aston Villa are thought to have held initial talks with The Magpies in the summer over signing Colback on a permanent basis however Villa boss Bruce has now denied that the club are looking to make a move for the player.

Colback started his career with United’s bitter rivals Sunderland where he worked under Bruce. The player made 135 appearances for the Wearsiders, scoring five goals while he also spent two loan spells with Ipswich Town.

In June 2014, Colback joined current club Newcastle United on a free transfer and the player has gone on to make 94 appearances for The Magpies, scoring five goals.

The midfielder is unlikely to remain with United beyond the current transfer window and a move to the Sky Bet Championship looks most likely.
